Can you name a director who has been so relentlessly entertaining while at the same time rejecting all notions of accepted film logic, in order to deliver his beautiful dream-state surrealisms? How the hell does he make it work? And yet he does... This one is a spooky, ambiguous ghost story set in Taisho-era Japan, and you have to take your hat off to how many ideas, illusions, theatrical effects and jokes Suzuki throws at his audience. Remember, this was 1981: way before digital effects or quick lighting set-ups, and yet it still feels effortless as a dream. Prepare to be amazed (and a little confused). Cinematic narcotics!
