Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Mokopuna was established in 1996 at Coromandel Street, Newtown. It was established from a desire by a number of families who lived in Central Wellington and had children attending Kohanga Reo had no further options in Te Reo Māori once they reached school age.
The school eventually outgrew its premises and moved to a vacant school site in Seatoun and was given permanent status in October 2007.
Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Mokopuna is classified as a State School and follows the principles of Te Aho Matua. It is comprised of a Kura Tuatahi (Primary School) from year 1 – 8, and a Wharekura (Secondary School) year 9 – 12. It is a composite school meaning that it is a combined Primary and Secondary School. Within the next year, a kohanga will be built on site.
