The task of poetry is to make something that feels alive on the page. How do we get to the heart of what we are trying to say, without being overly didactic or too oblique? How can we take linguistic and formal risks while staying emotionally honest? This workshop is a practical guide to generating new ideas, building metaphors and experimenting with text, but it’s also about how we integrate emotional honesty into our writing practice, and how we can adapt formal exercises to bring us closer to the heart of what we are trying to say.

Hera Lindsay Bird is a poet from Dunedin. Her debut, self titled book of poetry 'Hera Lindsay Bird' was published by Te Herenga Waka University Press and Penguin UK. She won the Jessie McKay Best First Book Award in 2017, The Sarah Broom Poetry Prize in 2017 and was an Arts Foundation New Generation Laureate in 2018. She is currently working on a novel and interactive text game for kids.
