Jephtha is the harrowing story of how Jephtha promises to sacrifice the first living creature he encounters upon returning home if God grants him the victory in battle. He is indeed victorious but sadly, his daughter upon hearing of his success wants to be the first to greet him, without knowing the pact he made with God and Jephtha has to honour his promise to sacrifice her, or break his word.
Jephtha contains much of Handel's finest music from the haunting "Waft Her Angels Through The Skies" and Iphis' heart-wrenching lament "Farewell Ye Limpid Springs" to the dramatic and shocking "Open Thy Marble Jaws, O Tomb" which Jephtha sings upon realising he has to sacrifice his daughter or "Scenes of Horror" sung by Jephtha's wife as a premonition of what is to come.
Jephtha contains a quartet and quintet for the soloists, and as always, there is a variety of fabulous choruses.
