Jephtha describes the harrowing story of how Jephtha made a promise to God to sacrifice the first creature to greet him on his return home, if God made him victorious in battle. Jephtha was indeed successful, but upon hearing this, his daughter wanted to be the first to meet him, not knowing of his pact with God and subsequently has to be sacrificed to fulfil Jephtha's terrible bargain.
The oratorio contains much of Handel's finest music from the haunting "Waft Her Angels Through The Skies", and Iphis' exquisite "Farewell Ye Limpid Springs" to spectacular dramatic airs such as "Open Thy Marble Jaws O Tomb" as Jephtha wrestles with following though on his promise to God or "Scenes of Horror" sung by Jephtha's wife Storge.
There is a quartet and a quintet of the soloists as well as many typically majestic choruses.
