Under the forest floor is a network of soil fungi [called a mycelium] that, through the root system, connects trees together. This has been referred to as the ‘wood wide web’ and is proposed as a means whereby trees communicate with each other. So, a forest might be thought of as a super-organism, a single entity in its own right rather than an eclectic grouping of independent parts.

This talk by Reg Harris will briefly touch on the science relating to the web, the mapping of the web globally, the interaction between climate change and fungal mycelium, and projects that help ensure carbon remains locked down underground.

Located in the Treehouse Seminar Room, Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā.
This talk is part of the Wellington Botanic Garden ‘Insights’ programme.
Free entry for the Friends, public entry by koha. You’re welcome to bring along your own ‘brown bag’ lunch to enjoy during the talk.
