Nitrogen is essential for the growth and development of plants, but it is not directly usable by them. However, a natural process called the nitrogen cycle helps convert atmospheric nitrogen into an absorbable form.
The talk, by Reg Harris, will highlight how, during the process of nitrogen fixation, certain bacteria in the soil and plant roots transform nitrogen into compounds that become available for plant uptake.
Some plant species have evolved a carnivorous habit to access nitrogen in low-nutrient environments. The talk will highlight the fascinating mechanisms of action of a small selection of carnivorous plants and their deadly efficiency in trapping and ‘dealing to’ the small animals that make up their diet.
Located in the Treehouse Seminar Room, Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā.
This talk is part of the Wellington Botanic Garden ‘Insights’ programme.
Free entry for the Friends, public entry by koha. You’re welcome to bring along your own ‘brown bag’ lunch to enjoy during the talk.
