The Auckland Studio Potters Association (ASP) has promoted and supported potters in Auckland for over 60 years; offering classes, firing services and a community that potters can call their own. That kind of loyalty has enabled the ASP to flourish, to enhance recognition for the pottery and ceramic arts in Auckland and throughout Aotearoa. Fire & Clay 2024 showcases and awards the outstanding pottery and ceramics of ASP’s membership. ASP is delighted to announce the selector and judge this year is artist, Fiona Jack.

Fiona Jack is an artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. Her work considers sociopolitical issues and the ways we represent ourselves to each other. Within most projects there are aspects of participation, consultation and/or collaboration with people and groups. Through observation, dialogue, collecting and digressive historical research Jack pieces together a fabric of references that inform the development of each body of work. Jack has an MFA from CalArts Los Angeles and is Head of School at Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Art at Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland and has been a long standing member of Auckland Studio Potters.

This annual exhibition celebrates excellence in ceramic practice and demonstrates both the depth and breadth of experience of ASP members, who range from senior practitioners to impassioned amateurs, as well as students studying in craft, design or fine arts programmes. The work on show includes functional ware and sculptural pieces, and encompasses a wide variety of making, glazing, and firing techniques.
