To the original inhabitants, it was ‘te pito o te henua, 'the navel at the centre of the world'. The Dutch, who were the first European nation to contact the island, chose a more pragmatic name – Easter Island, in honor of the day it was first sighted by them – Easter Sunday, 1722.
This Easter Sunday, join our Museum Guide, Ross, who will discuss some of his findings on moai and the history of Easter Island. This is Ross' specialist area of interest, and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. Ross is a visitor favourite, erudite, full of fascinating stories, and a love for sharing them with our community.
