A Play Reading
A dizzying mix of humour and rage, commentary and confessional, this is a spoken word experience that packs a punch.
Scenes from a yellow peril takes a scalpel to the outdated and orientalist images of the demure, soft-spoken and subservient East Asian. From examinations of rage to romantic and familial love, consumption of media, ancestral tributes and the deconstruction of language, the play is a kaleidoscopic vision of contemporary identity politics.
Award-winning Chinese-Kiwi playwright Nathan Joe pens devastatingly acute observations of the East Asian-New Zealand experience. Performed at microphones, this rehearsed reading is the real deal. Not to be missed.
