Tūngia te ururua kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke.
Set the overgrown bush alight and the new flax shoots will spring up.
Nau mai haere mai, all are welcome to attend an introduction and beyond to raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax).
Led by Linda Lee (Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Tākoto, Te Rarawa, Te Aupōri, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Huia) and kaiāwhina (Shannon Reid).
Starting with tikanga and making putiputi, (flowers) kono and konae (small containers), over time, continued participants develop their skills to craft more complex objects such as baskets, wall hangings, wahakura and kete. You will walk away with woven taonga at the end of each class.
For more information about what to expect, what to bring, and how tickets work visit otari raranga.wordpress.com.
If you are a beginner and/or we are harvesting for you please book at least three days in advance as we can only harvest in certain weather conditions because of tikanga.
NOTE: IF CLASS NUMBERS ARE TOO LOW, WE MAY HAVE TO CANCEL SO PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAILS BEFORE CLASS. (We will be able to transfer of refund your tickets.)
No experience is required. Please arrive on time for karakia (blessing).
Light refreshments will be provided and you are welcome to bring shared kai.
Occasionally, we will be moved to the Tāne Whakapirpiri Visitor's Centre due to other bookings. Please refer to website (upcoming classes) where venues will be specified for the class.
