Waimapihi, Waitangi, Kumutoto, Kaiwharawhara, Pipitea, Tutaenui, Tiakawai….these are the streams which lay beneath our city. Far from being lost, these culverted watercourses continue to flow below our buildings and streets. Fragments still remain daylit but 95.5% are underground; in time, could these streams be daylighted again?

Photographer Andy Spain has traversed the city, seeking out the remnants of these streams; he was able to find and photograph six. For this occasion his work has strayed from his familiar practice, shifting into something more intriguing and ethereal. This exhibition aims to add to the voices shining a light on our control on the land and the need to work with nature and mātauranga Māori.

Accompanying this exhibition will be a series of free lunchtime ‘Awa talks’ throughout the week.

Monday 18th September 12:30 Andy Spain and Liz Mellish: Opening Event
Wednesday 20th September 12:30 Kali Mercier: Sponge Cities
Thursday 21st September 12:30 Robin Skinner: Mapping History
Friday 22nd September 12:30 Kedron Parker

With much thanks to Te Wharewaka o Pōneke, and the Wellington Tenth Trust, for their support.
