Looking to get exploring and connect the kids with nature these school holidays?
Are you and your family keen to learn about Wellingtons’ common plants and species and have some time outdoors?
Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington is the most species rich city in New Zealand, and we are proud to be getting our friends together for some special events throughout the city these holidays.
Events are back and the skies the limit, so come and join us to celebrate the global City Nature Challenge for 2022! The WCC Play crew have teamed up with local nature experts who will guide you through bush, streams, coastlines, and wild Wellington wilderness, on the hunt for interesting wildlife!
Otari-Wilton's Bush is an internationally significant native botanic garden located just 5 km from the Wellington CBD. This unique sanctuary, with its 14 km of walking tracks, is the ideal place to experience New Zealand's unique bush environment and native bird life. You can expect to learn something new about different plant species, get to know the local area, learn about biodiversity and citizen science, and play in the wild with your family and friends!
We will also tell you all about iNaturalist and local experts will share their knowledge and taonga.
Join one, or all our fun events, for free.
Please register so we can keep track of numbers.
Meeting point: Tāne Whakapiripiri (Ōtari Wiltons Visitor Information Centre)
Getting there: It's an approximately 15 minute journey by car from Wellington city centre to Otari-Wilton's Bush. Or take the No 14 Wilton bus from Lambton Quay to Otari-Wilton's Bush.
What to bring: Bring a drink bottle, and a spare layer of clothing to keep warm and dry. If you’re able to, download iNaturalist on your mobile phone before you arrive so you’re ready to go. Please note, it’s not essential to bring a mobile phone, there will be lots of fun to be had without one.
