Nāu te raurau, nāku te raurau, ka ora ai te iwi.
With my basket and your basket, the people will thrive.

Nau mai haere mai, all are welcome to attend an introduction and beyond to raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax).

Spring is here!!! We have classes running through to mid-December. We hold weekend and weeknight classes and hold some wānanga (longer classes to refine techniques learned in the shorter classes indicated in ticket details).

Weeknights start at 5:30 but ka pai if you can't arrive until 6pm. Karakia will commence then.

Linda Lee (Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Tākoto, Te Rawara, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Hainemana, Ngāti Pākehā) with Frank Topia (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Haua) and kaiāwhina (helpers).

Classes held at the Leonard Cockayne Centre aim to spread knowledge of traditional Māori weaving and healing practices utilising the native plants at Ōtari Wilton’s Bush. We thrive on bringing our surrounding community together regularly.

Starting with tikanga and making kono and konae (small containers), over time, continued particpants develop their skills and craft new objects such as baskets and wahakura and finer kete.

For beginners, harakeke and other tools will be provided until you have been taught tikanga for harvesting your own. You will walk away with woven taonga at the end of each class. When purchasing your ticket add the free "I'm a Beginner - Please harvest for me" ticket so I know to harvest for you. We harvest for the first two classes while you learn tikanga and to identify harakeke and locations to hauhake (harvest).

If you want us to harvest for you please try to book at least three days in advance.

Rongoā (Māori healing) tea and other light refreshments will be provided but do bring shared kai.

Please BYO water bottle, blanket/towel and regulars bring available tools such as scissors, pegs, bobby pins, butter knife, sharp knife, tarpaulin, bucket for para (waste), haehae, hapene etc.

Children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult with a ticket.

If you purchase a ticket and cannot attend please let us know as numbers are restricted to 23. OtariKakano4@gmail.com

Occasionally, we will be moved to the Tāne Whakapirpiri Visitor's Centre due to other bookings.

Please refer www.otariraranga.wordpress.com (upcoming classes) where venues will be specified or check your emails before turning up.
