Spring has sprung at the Howick Historical Village! Come along this Live Day to experience the gardens filled with colour and busy bees.
As part of Bee Aware Month, visitors can learn about the vital role of bees and other pollinators and how to create eco-friendly green spaces for them to thrive. Find hidden emblems crafted in wood, in an Eco Discovery Trail created by our heritage gardener Luke Southern. Meet our very own Village bees in a talk with local beekeeper Corban at 1:30 pm. The council’s Compost Collective will also be on site, presenting the rundown on traditional composting, worm farming and bokashi in a free 2-hour workshop at 10 am.
Step back in time and meet costumed villagers demonstrating tasks in interactive activities throughout the day. Churn cream into butter, attend a Victorian school lesson or try your hand at making candles! The coal range in the Puhi Nui homestead will be fired up, with something tasty on the stovetop. The sweet shop will be open with an array of old-fashioned lollies, fudge and treats on offer.
With games, crafts, and plenty to entertain all ages! Bring a picnic or pick up something from the homely Homestead Café and make a day of it.
No booking is required but registration is encouraged for the beekeeping talk or Compost Collective workshop. Register for the compost workshop. Registered participants receive $40 off a composting system of their choice.
