Join us for a day of tree planting in Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui– Oxbow Loop track. We are planting a native forest here and in a few years’ time it’s going to look very different. If you’d like to be part of the team planting 11,000 trees in this location, we’d love your help.
Baring Head/Ōrua-pouanui is an iconic landscape, with wonderful views over Cook Strait. It is rugged, yet spectacular land and is visible from Wellington. The river is of significant ecological importance and it’s home to rare Gray Scrub plants. The spotted skink and banded dotterels also nest here. Each winter volunteers do riparian planting along the riverbanks which will help to filter excess nutrients from the river before it empties into the ocean and provides essential habitat for freshwater fish such as inanga and eels. This is suitable for people with a medium fitness as you will need to carry plants and dig holes, but the area being planted is a flat walk away from the carpark and easy to get to. This is not suitable for young children and recommended for 13 years and above. There is a toilet in the carpark. No dogs are allowed in this park.
We provide: an experienced team leader, tools, gloves, health and safety management and training.
What to bring/wear: sturdy boots/gum boots, comfortable clothes, and a waterproof jacket are essential. Layering and wearing a hat or beanie is a good way to stay warm. This site can be very exposed, so it is a good idea to bring extra clothes. Also bring a water bottle, lunch, and snacks. We will provide gloves and spades, but if you want to bring your favourites from home that would be very welcome.
