Alesha Mehta: Rituals of the Nonhuman

'Rituals of the Nonhuman 'is a live contemporary dance performance by Alesha Mehta, who you may recognise as a key model in 'Isolation Hotel' and past works by Heather Straka.

This improvised work explores notions of posthumanism through interactions between the nonhuman objects and the human. An exploration of site-specific navigations and responses to the objects is unveiled. What happens when the human steps into the space that is already active with objects, meaning and energy lingering within and between the walls?

Alesha Mehta is a current PhD student at the University of Auckland in dance studies engaging with posthumanism, decoloniality and feminism through ritual practice. Alesha's practice engages with incorporating philosophical texts of the Purusharthas to forge a link between her cultural heritage and creative aspirations whilst simultaneously critiquing and challenging concepts through a feminist lens.

Alesha's curiosities reside within exploring multiple identities that reside within her body through ritual to find pathways where nonhuman objects may act as collaborators, mirrors and companions in a solo practice experience.

'Rituals of the Nonhuman' is free to attend but spaces are limited so please register on the Museum's website if you are keen to attend.
