"Follow geologist and author Bruce Hayward on a 2km guided walk across sand around the coastal cliffs of South Piha. Learn about rocks deposited on the submarine slopes of the ancient Waitākere volcano, New Zealand’s largest stratovolcano which erupted between 22 and 15 million years ago.
The tour will focus on Whakaari pā and Te Piha / Lion Rock – a 16-million-year-old volcanic neck; wave erosion along ancient intrusions of magma that has produced the tunnel through Taitomo Island and The Gap; and possibly walk through The Blowhole, depending on sand level.
