Baking bread in the spirit of Parihaka.

Every November, Judith Frost-Evans and others in her community make bread in memory of peaceful Parihaka.

On November 5 1881, 1,600 troops invaded Parihaka, a pacifist community which had come to symbolise peaceful resistance to the confiscation of Māori land.

In anticipation of a violent advance, the people of Parihaka baked 500 loaves of bread. The next morning, thousands of Māori welcomed the soldiers with waiata and baskets full of bread before the settlement was destroyed and its people were attacked and stolen.

Join Judith at Nairn Street Cottage for an intimate baking ceremony and sharing of stories.

Sunday 7 November | 10am – 2pm | Nairn Street Cottage | Koha | FULLY BOOKED
