Leithfield Garden Tour

The historic village of Leithfield, only 44km north of Christchurch, holds an array of interesting and inspiring gardens. Join us on our Garden Tour as we open the gates for you to explore these flourishing spaces.

Stroll through 14 gardens. From compact and colourful yards, to sprawling country-style fields, each tells its own story.

From clipped hedges and topiary, to an oasis of thriving natives, to a bumper potager garden bursting with seasonal veg, to a large bonsai collection, to a diy propagator’s delight at the beach…, these diverse offerings represent the passions of our gardeners, as well as the unique natural environment of Leithfield.

Some reflect the special heritage of our village. We are thrilled to have one of Leithfield’s hidden treasures, The Sanctuary of Fourviere, included – a garden designed to tell the history of the first Catholic Mission in the Pacific. Be sure to view the iconic paintings of Chris Verryt, and oil paintings by local artist Ian Loretz.

Harleston House [1863] and The Old Vicarage [1867] are also included. Both are fabulous reminders of yesteryear, with their owners lovingly working to restore their gardens to their former glory.

Be inspired by the floral art from Floral Art North Canterbury on display at our local church [1906], and enjoy daily creative demonstrations of Kokedama and Magicmoss, as well as growing bonsai and oil painting.

We have 12 talented artists showcasing their creations on our Art Trail. And don’t forget to enjoy our local eateries: Better Half kitchen, The Old Leithfield and Pukeko Junction Café. The Leithfield Community Committee will also be serving light refreshments.

All proceeds go towards our local community-owned Library - to re-decorating the inside, buying new books and the day-to-day running.
