Join Hanahiva Rose, the Gallery's own Assistant Curator Contemporary Art and Collections on a guided tour, offering visitors an insight into the artworks, themes and histories touched on in Brett Graham's new exhibition Tai Moana Tai Tangata, as well as taking the opportunity to view Maioha Kara's Salutations in the Open Window Gallery.

Hanahiva Rose is assistant curator of contemporary art and collections at the Govett Brewster in New Plymouth. She is regularly published nationally for her writing on Māori and Pacific art practices in Aotearoa.

Tai Moana Tai Tangata is a solo exhibition of new work by Brett Graham (Ngāti Kōroki Kahukura, Tainui), the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery's 2019 Artist in Residence. Curated by Anna-Marie White (Te Ātiawa), Tai Moana Tai Tangata revisits key events of New Zealand history as witnessed by Māori who suffered the most severe penalties of the colonial process.

Engaging the architecture of warfare on the colonial frontier and the language of war memorials in times of peace, the exhibition commemorates historic relationships and political pacts between Tainui and Taranaki iwi in the face of new challenges wrought by European settlement.
