Te Pou Theatre presents:

WHYTANGI
(you know wai!!)
…And other lost-in-translation stories

"I certify that the above is as literal a translation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the idiom of the language will admit of." Henry Williams - Wow, right?

Inspired by this cover-note to the "first" and worst attempt at lawful cohesion between Māori and Pākeha. WHYTANGI?? brings together six Māori playwrights to present a bilingual collection of cheeky short plays that responds to this ratchet assessment of Te Reo Māori, the perils of translation, the impact of our treaty partnership and also - what would it be like if the tables were turned?!

In just over an hour our quartet of performers take on a multitude of roles, from futuristic detectives to early colonial matchmakers - all from the imaginations of our kaituhi Māori Albert Belz, Amber Curreen, Annette Morehu, Antonio Te Maioha, Tainui Tukiwaho.

Directors: Tainui Tukiwaho with Amanda Rees & Amber Curreen

Ngā mihi ki ngā kaitautoko Creative New Zealand, Foundation North & Chisholm Whitney Charitable Trust
