The Elms Trust in conjunction with the Ōtamataha Trust and the Pukehinahina Charitable Trust invite you to attend this talk by distinguished Māori Studies academic Dr Lyndsay Head. Dr Head has a strong background in the translation of 19th century Māori texts. Her work has included translation and commentary on the Ua Rongopai the gospel of the founder of the Pai Marire faith, Te Ua Haumēne, and she has filled numerous commissions for a number of Waitangi Tribunal inquiries.

Commissioned by the three Trusts, Dr Head recently completed the translation of all the Māori correspondence of Archdeacon Brown and in doing so has cast a new light on the relationship between Archdeacon Brown and his Māori converts ranging from a familial domesticity which show the obvious affection that members of the Brown household were held in; to matters of great import of the time. Letters from the Ngāti Haua leader Te Waharoa and his Kingmaker son, Wiremu Tāmihana Tarapīpipi, are in the collection along with Waitaha leader Hākaraia Māhika.
