The visionary behind 2018 Festival triumph Giselle, Akram Khan was always destined to become one of the world’s leading choreographers and dancers.
But as a child growing up in London, he was expected to follow a different path; inherit and run the family business, a humble curry house.
The Curry House Kid documents his memories of growing up on Brick Lane with his Bangladeshi parents, and the violence and racism that shaped his everyday life – all culminating in a ruminative, hypnotic dance piece in a nearby abandoned warehouse.
This screening is followed by a panel discussion as part of AAF Talks, curated by Rosabel Tan.
Cat Ruka (Tempo Dance Festival director), theatremaker Ahi Karunaharan, poet Nida Fiazi and playwright Stanley Makuwe unpack the considerations they make when drawing on their own (and their communities') experiences, the art that has changed their lives, and the idea of hope. Chaired by James Roque (Boy Mestizo, Frickin Dangerous Bro).
“[A] brave, beautiful documentary.” – The Guardian
