Joshu is a marine geoscientist who leads the Marine Geological Processes science research programme at NIWA, Wellington. His broad interest is the shape of the seafloors – spanning submarine canyons, landslides, active tectonics, and offshore groundwater systems, as well as lakes.
Joshu and his team resurveyed Kaikoura's seabed following the November 2016 earthquake, and in his presentation he’ll share this research in the context of New Zealand’s vast seafloor landscape. Based on the dramatic changes that occurred down to 2000m water depth in the Kaikoura Canyon, the team has made major advances in our global understanding of how the seafloor evolves through time.
