From the Moons of Jupiter to the Ice Shelves of Antarctica.

Dr Professor Craig Stevens is a physical oceanographer with a joint position at NIWA and the University of Auckland, and is a past president of the New Zealand Association of Scientists.

His research focus is on extreme ocean environments, and how they influence the world around us. Present work includes the fate of ice shelf meltwater plumes around Antarctica, and energetic tidal turbulence.

In this talk, he’ll describe what is known about ice-covered oceans, ranging from the moons of Saturn and Jupiter, through to a recent expedition exploring the workings of the hidden ocean beneath the planet’s largest ice shelf – the Ross Ice Shelf.

Barclay Theatre.
