This workshop is suitable for beginner, intermediate and experienced weavers. All participants will have the opportunity to prepare, dye and weave NZ flax/harakeke, and will create their own beautiful and unique kete/basket to take home with them.
Weaving projects of three different levels of technical skill will be taught:
Beginners: Create one or two small pieces - the small two-corner "magic kete" and/or the small four-corner "rourou" basket.
Intermediate: Create an intermediate level handbag-style kete - with a "folded" base, square corners, and a two-ply flax/harakeke fibre handle.
Experienced: Create an advanced skill level "kete whakairo"/patterned basket, with a "tapiki" weave base. Add a two, three or four ply fibre handle. For this advanced level project please bring with you to the workshop prepared flax strips, rather than raw leaves, in order to ensure your project can be completed within the time available. You will need 60+ strips, 15mm wide, 80cm long. Please also bring several raw leaves to use for handles etc.
Decorate your kete with paua pieces, feathers, beads, and any other items you may wish to bring and use.
(Paua and beads will be available for purchase at the workshop. Feathers available at no cost).
