Ongaonga Museum

The Ongaonga Museum at 83 Bridge Street is a collection of quaint historic buildings clustered around a Green to form a charming historic village which includes a beautifully designed and restored butchers shop. The museum buildings and artifacts are mostly original and give a good idea of how the village and district looked in the early days of its development.

The Coles Joinery Factory at 52 Bridge Street has been part of the museum since 2014. This is where Edward Coles built a flourishing business from where many of the houses, schools and churches in the district were built. Examples of the Coles Brothers' work can be viewed in the village proper, for example the house on the corner of Herrick Street and Mill Street.

Ongaonga is a village of historic interest which has retained a number of late 19th and early 20th century buildings. A brochure for a self-guided walk of the village is available from the museum.

The museum is open to the public on Sundays from 11 am - 3 pm and on request. Arrangements outside of regular opening hours can be made via the museum website www.ongaongamuseum.org.nz
Access to the museum is $5 for adults, children free. Donations to the Coles Restoration fund are also most welcome.
