Red Square will be an exciting and ambitious component of the upcoming Auckland Festival 2009. This multi-venue hub will be the festivals 'party zone' taking over a number of performance spots, including The Famous Spiegeltent, the Festival Club, and the Stella Artois Festival Bar for very special performances. Red Square events will include cabaret, musical comedy, bands and performance art, all centered around the Aotea Precinct.
There are dozens of great acts booked for Red Square, including the wildly unorthodox Tim Minchin, performing hilarious comedic cabaret, fresh from a big sold-out UK schedule. He'll be at The Festival Club on 5 - 8 March. Also on board for Red Square will be the seductive and sultry Leila Adu, back in NZ after winning them over in the US and Europe. Described as 'a voice like hot treacle on broken glass', her 8 - 9 March performances will be commanding moments of musical intoxication. The Wide Alley, also at the Festival Club, will fuse Chinese and Western sounds for an evocative interpretation of the cross cultural sounds of Chengdu's street, The Wide Alley, on 6 - 7 March.
