Ipswich

“Post-punk? Post-shoegaze? Nah, this is pure post-quake.”

Ipswich formed in a shakey Christchurch, late March 2011. Comprising Timaru ex-pat Steven Marr (vocals/guitar), Ashburtonian Matthew Gunn (bass) and Christchurch local Jamie Larson (drums), Ipswich represents virtually the entire Canterbury region. However, the band are far from Canterbury plain.

The band’s self-titled debut EP quickly garnered attention for its raw shoegaze sound and DIY feel among Christchurch music fans and local media. With a broken city practically void of live music venues, Ipswich found their feet by playing at house parties to eager young fans (often equally as munted as their city).

When music venues began to re-open in the city, Ipswich quickly became regulars on the Christchurch scene, picking up support slots for the likes of local heroes T54 and exports O’Lovely with a slot on the Flying Nun 30th Anniversary tribute show bill rounding off an eventful year for the trio.

The band’s second EP ‘Living In A Stranger’s Home’ shows a move towards a more brutal, claustrophobic sound reminiscent of Spiderland-era Slint and Southern noise-fiends Brains.
