Don’t miss this concert by a world-class jazz trio, featuring two internationally renowned musicians from New York: pianist Aaron Goldberg and bassist Matt Penman.

Matt Penman has lived in New York since 1995 and has performed with many of the world’s top jazz musicians. He spent 14 years as a member of the SFJazz Collective, collaborating with artists like Bobby Hutcherson, Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, Miguel Zenon, Eric Harland, and Nicholas Payton.

Matt has toured with vocalist Madeleine Peyroux and jazz fusion icon John Scofield. His extensive list of collaborators includes Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Seamus Blake, Chris Potter, and Billy Childs. He’s featured on over 140 albums, including the Grammy-nominated Soulcall by Nnenna Freelon, and has released three of his own: The Unquiet (2001), Catch of the Day (2008), and Good Question (2018).

An accomplished educator, Matt has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory, the Brubeck Institute, the Banff Workshop for Creative and Improvised Music, and the Siena International Summer Jazz Workshop.

Aaron Goldberg has been hailed by JazzTimes as “one of the most scintillating performers in jazz.” He is known for his distinctive, fluid style that merges tradition with innovation. Over a 20-year career, he has led his own trio and worked with jazz legends like Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Guillermo Klein.

After earning awards from Berklee and DownBeat magazine, Aaron moved to New York at 17 to attend The New School. At 18, he began performing with the iconic vocalist Betty Carter, and later with Al Foster, Freddie Hubbard, Nicholas Payton, Stefon Harris, and Tom Harrell.

In 1997, Aaron formed his first trio with Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland, producing acclaimed albums such as Worlds (2006), Home (2010), and The Now (2015). In 1998, he gained international recognition touring with the Joshua Redman Quartet, Wynton Marsalis’s Quintet, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Over the past decade, he has led his trio and performed with Cecile McLorin Salvant, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Camila Meza, Ravi Coltrane, and Madeleine Peyroux. His latest album as a bandleader is At the Edge of the World (2018), featuring Matt Penman and Leon Parker.

“He’s versatile and impressive, and he swings hard.” – The New York Times
