The Te Ahu a Turanga highway is now open, and you are keen to know more about the stunning artworks.

Visit mahi toi sites with Tohunga Toi Warren Warbrick (Rangitāne) and discover how the mahi toi, embedded in the highway, expresses relationships between the four Iwi involved in the project. Find out how the the tools and techniques of working with harakeke (flax) inspired large sculptures and infrastructure design work.

Hear Warren’s kōrero on site. Spend 100 mins at three locations in the Parahaki Bridge vicinity. Then choose whether to self-drive to two other locations on the highway.

ITINERARY

By 8.50am: Make your own way to Te Āpiti Manawatū Gorge Carpark and meet at the Parahaki Island Lookout.
9.00 - 10.40am: TE HĪKOI TOI with Warren Warbrick: Visit Parahaki Island Lookout, Western Roundabout, and Parahaki Bridge.
10.40 - 11.30am: Self-drive to two highway scenic lookouts: Western Lookout and Eastern Lookout.
11.30am: Drive past the Eastern Roundabout, near Woodville and view Potahu by Sandy Adsett as you travel to your destination.

Getting About

We will walk approximately 2.5km, on mostly flat shared pathways with a fine gravel surface. This includes 30 steps up and 30 steps down from Parahaki Bridge. We recommend you wear sturdy walking shoes.

Weather

It can be windy on site. We recommend wearing layers, including a hat. The event will proceed in light winds and light rain, or better. If the weather is forecast to be heavy rain or worse, the event will be cancelled. Should the event be cancelled, the full amount of the transaction (less any non-refundable portion if applicable) will be refunded to the credit card used for the original purchase.

MEETING PLACE AT 8.50am: Parahaki Island Lookout (at the far end of the carpark)

Before / After

Previous participants tell us they have enjoyed a hot drink or something to eat before or after Te Hīkoi Toi. Consider including a stop in Ashhurst, Woodville or at the Artisan Cafe Kitchen on Fitzherbert East Road as part of your trip. New to the car park area is Gorge Quarter - grab a coffee or ice cream before or after your walk (www.gorgequarter.nz).
