Zine curious? Come along to this general introduction to Zine making.

Expert Zine maker and designer Hannah Wynn will share with you the history and process of Zine making. You’ll get the chance to look through a Zine library and then make your own!

All materials are supplied but if you have photos, old magazines, or anything you'd like to draw inspiration from or add to your Zine, please bring them along.

Please note: This workshop is open to those aged 15 years and over only.

Pronounced “Zeen”, Zines are short-run self-published (maga)zines, touching on a variety of topics from music and art, to politics, sexuality, and humour.

Content can be written, drawn, painted, collaged, or any other form the Zine maker desires. Culturally and historically, Zines have served as a powerful outlet for content considered to be outside the mainstream, and provide a safe, independent platform of expression for under-represented and marginalised voices.

About Hannah Wynn
Hannah Wynn graduated from Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in 2016, with a Bachelor of Creative Industries, majoring in Graphic Design. Since then she has immersed herself in the creative sector working on many projects for Tauranga City Council, Font Public Art Trust, Molly Morpeth Canaday Award, and Boon Street Art Festival, to name a few.

In the same year she graduated, Hannah co-founded the Tauranga Zinefest with fellow student and artist Lynette Fisher. The duo nurtured the zine craze in Tauranga together for a couple of years, but since 2019 Hannah has been flying solo. This year Hannah gifted Tauranga Zinefest to the Tauranga Arts Festival Trust, allowing it to flourish in the next part of its journey. However, Hannah is still very keen on all things zine — it's in her DNA!

If you can't make it, you can still pop in to purchase and/or make your own Zine!

Coinciding with Hannah's workshop, we have the Joy Machine currently in the pop up Learning Centre:

Open 10am-4pm.

4 January-4 February 2024 (Thursday to Saturday only).

Zines are priced from $2-$10.

Joy Machine commissioned by Hannah Wynn with funding from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. Original artwork created by Paul Darragh.
