A long Labour weekend of music, dance and folk fun at the Wellington Folk Festival.
You can come for a day or an evening, for a fun family outing, or go total immersion for weekend and camp out or or book a bunk.
This year we have a great lineup of headline performers across a range of musical genre on our main stage. This features Fred Smith (Australia), Acapollinations, The Kist, Elyssa Vulpes, Nicola Mitchell, Vox Ethno and Roughtown.
But it is not just about watching the big acts on the main stage. There are also opportunities to participate. The “Balladier” stage runs all weekend with sets by local performers and festival attendees by invitation. There are blackboard concerts open to all. And there are endless opportunities for informal singing and playing with other attendees around the site.
We also have a programme of dance events, and a series of workshops where you can learn about different styles of folk music and dance.
We also have a range of activities for younger people. The Youth Gathering runs all weekend providing a safe space for those aged 5 to 18 to get together and share their music. The Joan Prior Awards show will present a concert by performers aged 18 to 25, and the Walker Trust Awards will feature performers aged between 11 and 16, and 17 to 25 in more traditional folk styles. Note prior registration is necessary for these activities - details on the Festival website.
In addition the “Village Green” will host a range of craft stalls.
All up, a weekend of musical fun for all the family, in the beautiful setting of the Brookfields Outdoor Education Centre in Moore’s Valley Wainuiomata. For further details see the Festival website at https://wellingtonfolkfestival.org.nz/. Tickets are on sale at Humanitix.
