In an intimate set, NZ Music Award nominee Warren Love sings new love songs as well as some from his acclaimed 2006 album Warren Love Band. With his guitar, Warren’s 72 year old voice and beautiful country folk songs are accompanied by an intriguing commentary on their place in the hero’s journey. With a career beginning in theatre, Warren Love was busking in Auckland in the late 1980s when he was approached to organise the Jam Nights at Temple Bar & Venue on Queen Street. He supported a new wave of NZ singer songwriters by establishing the Temple’s packed out Acid Test songwriters’ competition, which ran for six years. He was also a contributor to the Busker’s Beat column for NZ Musician magazine. Moving to Wellington in 1999, he formed the Warren Love Band, playing at Wellington’s The Space, Te Papa, Bar Bodega, Wellington Folk Festival and The Bluegrass Society, as well as being a popular solo performer at Indigo venues’ Acoustic Lounge sessions. The current show was presented to high acclaim at the recent Nelson Fringe Festival. In this reprise of Love Songs, Love brings together a cool ensemble comprising one of NZ’s top jazz double- bassists Pat Bleakley, with newcomer Louise Perzigian on banjo. Love’s extraordinary voice and evocative and beautiful songwriting are among the best of alternative NZ country folk sounds.
