Wairio Wetlands

Explore Wairio Wetland on foot with Kara and Maddy from Mountains to Sea Wellington. Kara will share Mātauranga Māori and ecological background for this stunning wetland walk where we will see wading birds and native plants.You will also learn about the fish and their importance for the kākahi or freshwater mussels living at the edge of the lake. This beautiful walk has been a popular event in the past, so register quickly!

In 2008, Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Rangitāne o Wairarapa, Pāpāwai Marae, Kohunui Marae, Greater Wellington Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and South Wairarapa District Council came together to form the Wairarapa Moana Wetlands Project. By pooling resources and working towards a shared vision, the Project aims to achieve much more than could have been achieved by individual organisations.

Wairio Wetlands is a self drive walk.

Opposite the entrance to Boggy Pond. There will be a Mountains to Sea flag there to let you know you have arrived at the right spot.
