'The Future of Law: Tradition, Innovation, the Environment, and Beyond …' by Professor Trevor Daya-Winterbottom
This lecture will focus on four key topics. First, it will provide a retrospective on tradition in the Law and how this has influenced the shape of our legal system. Second, it will examine the dynamic capability of Law for innovation – using examples from the 19th and 20th centuries to illustrate how the Law has responded to revolutionary industrial developments. Third, it will interrogate recent developments in environmental law – focusing on climate change litigation. Finally, it will look to the future and the implications for the Law and legal education driven by ethical issues arising from the global financial crisis and the “me too” campaign, and the impact of artificial intelligence and new technologies – and the skills that will be required by tomorrow’s lawyers.
This 45-minute public lecture will be held at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, starting at 5.45pm. Opus Bar will be open from 5pm.
Free parking is available on campus via Gate 2B, Knighton Road, Hamilton from 4.30pm.
