A Dunedin Artist? What might have been...
25 February, 2024
2:00 PM
When Frances Hodgkins was building a career in 1890s Dunedin, what were her prospects? This talk will consider the models, trends and competitors she saw around her as she decided on her own ambitions. What did she see that persuaded her to make that life-changing departure for Europe in 1901?

Dorothy Kate Richmond, friend and rival
24 March, 2024
2:00 PM
It is well known that D.K. Richmond (1861-1935) made an ideal companion for Frances Hodgkins's first European journey. But when, in 1906, Hodgkins returned to Europe and Richmond stayed in Wellington, they parted ways definitively. This talk looks at the distinctly different career that this decision created for Richmond, who is also a Field collection artist.

"Thick and thin by turns": art in post-war Britain
28 April, 2024
2:00 PM
As Frances Hodgkins observed to her brother-in-law William Field at the end of 1918, things were very unstable in Britain when the War ended. Times were hard for artists as for others, and this talk examines the ways and means by which an uncertain Hodgkins managed to re-establish her career.
