The Ambassadors of Swing from Wellington: Baron Oscar Laven (sax, clarinet), Chris Yeabsley (keyboards), Dan Yeabsley (double bass), John Rae (drums). Photo: PSP Media
The TJC has hosted Oscar and one of his countless stage lineups numerous times and they keep coming back as New Plymouth is one of his favourite venues. Here’s what reviewer Nathan Wyde wrote in UK Jazz News in 2022: ““Lavën’s writing lends itself ideally to this partnership, with the mischievously prowling Night Forest Cat an especially evocative example. His conception has a terrific interpreter in Scottish drummer, the now Wellington-based John Rae, whose grasp of the saxophonist’s need for support and drive in throaty full cry and delicate colouring in more tender moments is complete.”
The Plymouth’s enlarged ballroom is a fabulous cabaret-style venue with bar and bar snacks available, dance floor, great lighting, professional sound control. Admission: casual $35, TJC members $20, student members $5, NP Club members $30, eftpos/cash at door.
