Explore how to create texture and pattern using wax with a variety of tools, from everyday items to traditional canting.

You’ll start by learning about the type of wax and traditional tools used for Batik, followed by how to apply and manipulate the wax onto a plate. You’ll then be given a set of abstract pre-cut card shapes to create your collagraph.

While the collagraph is solidifying, you’ll construct the background using monoprint techniques and colour options. This is a direct, painterly approach that can add variations to your final print. You’ll then print the wax collagraph over the top of the monoprints. In this process you’ll be guided through the intricacies of registration, inking, and how to manage the changes in the collagraph plate as the wax compresses.

By the end of the workshop you’ll have two prints to take away with you on Fabriano cotton rag paper.

This class is excellent for both beginner and experienced printmakers who wish to explore alternative ways of abstract mark making.

What to bring:
• An apron or clothing you don’t mind getting a bit inky.
• All other tools and materials will be provided.
