Come along to hear a first-hand account of the RNZAF’s deployment to Somalia in 1993 by Air Force Museum Director and Wing Commander (retired) Brett Marshall.
Back then three RNZAF Andovers and crews from No. 42 Squadron were sent to Mogadishu as part of a United Nations operation to avert a humanitarian crisis sparked by a civil war.
The 62-strong contingent flew 233 missions in difficult conditions over a five-month period as part of the Unified Task Force (UNITAF) multinational force.
The rugged Andover – with its versatile load carrying capabilities – came into its own, delivering critical food supplies and providing air support to communities all over Somalia.
