These two one-and-a-half hour pilgrimage tours of Rīpapa Island will include karakia and commentary by Reverend Maui Stuart. The tour will focus on the plight of Parihaka prisoners interred on Rīpapa in the early 1880s and the care and manaakitanga given them by the people of Te Wheke marae. Times are 12.30-2pm and 2.30-4pm.
This is part of an annual series of events hosted by Parihaka Network – Nga Manu Korihi Otautahi Trust. Follow NMKŌ at Facebook www.facebook.com/ParihakaOtautahi/ and Instagram ww.instagram.com/parihakaotautahi/ or contact by email parihakaotautahi@gmail.com.
Tour bookings go live this week at Black Cat Cruises https://book.blackcat.co.nz/activity/selection?filter=ProdGroup-Special&workingDate=2024-11-02 or ring (03) 3289-078 for further information. Each tour is for 30 people maximum ($30/adult, $20/5-15-year-olds, under-fives free), so book early to avoid disappointment. Koha will also be taken for Rev. Stuart.
Please note, wheelchairs cannot be catered for because of dis/embarking from the boat and also steps on and off the island, however only mild-moderate fitness levels are required.
What to bring: walking shoes, warm clothing and a jacket, sunscreen, water bottle, camera/phone. (Do not underestimate the weather. It can be cold and windy on the island and conditions can change rapidly.)
Tours will go ahead in sun and rain and will be cancelled only if sea conditions are rough. Cancellations will be posted on the Black Cat Cruise website and notified on NMKŌ social media.
