In this first programme of their 2024 concert season with guest soloist Lucinda Moon, Restoration performs one of Bach’s best-loved works, the violin concerto in E major, along with Bach sinfonias and music by Bach’s contemporary, Philipp Heinrich Erlebach. Nearly all of Erlebach’s very attractive and prolific output was tragically destroyed in a fire soon after his death – this is the only reason his music is almost unknown today. One of the few works that survived was a set of Overture-suites that had been published in 1693 and performed to wide acclaim – Restoration plays one of these superbly varied suites of French-style dances from the courts of Germany.

This year Restoration presents a concert series 'French Art and Italian Gusto' exploring the twin pinnacles of baroque music: the art of the French dance suite and the style of the Italian concerto. The programmes are built around two of Bach’s best-loved works, the E major violin concerto BWV1042, and the Italian Concerto BWV971. To these glories of the Italian 'gusto' we are adding two superb French overture-suites, one by Bach’s slightly older contemporary, Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, and the other JS Bach’s own French Overture, which takes the older composer’s model and transforms it with Bach’s genius into a model of this style for all time.

Restoration is one of New Zealand’s most experienced and accomplished baroque ensembles. The members of the group have been working together over many years in concerts, tours and recordings, and collaborating with numerous visiting and local artists specializing in the performance of baroque music and dance using the original instruments, styles and techniques of the time. In this season they are again joined by Australia’s foremost baroque violinist, Lucinda Moon, renowned for her deep understanding of the music, her beautiful sound, expressiveness and freedom in her playing. The group’s guiding principle is that this music speaks most directly to us with its original voice and inflections, and that modern audiences need no compromises to modern tastes and demands, to gain the greatest enjoyment and enlightenment from this window into the wonderfully foreign world of the past.
