Join us at the Village Community Cinema for our 2024 season of PICTURE THIS - The Inspiration Behind The Creation. In this series, artists, film makers, musicians, creatives, share with us, the film that has influenced or inspired their artistic practice, analytically reflecting on their work in correlation with their chosen film.

'Looking into the Darkness'
Bram Stoker's Dracula was the gateway into horror films for local filmmaker Gary Davies, being the first Horror Gary ever saw on the big screen. Despite being self-confessed spooked by horror, he loved it - a rich, sumptuous re-telling of a classic that never before had interested him much; and to this day, Gary's still not that much into vampires.

But Francis Ford Coppola's film is a visual masterpiece, utilizing old school in-camera special effects techniques - some from the dawn of cinema itself - and eschewing any of the then-exploding CGI wizardry being insisted on by everyone in Hollywood. A mindset that Gary has carried throughout his filmmaking process - use as much practical FX as possible, with computer generated imagery used only when necessary. Tangible nightmares on the screen.

Gary is now a Horror film maker himself, always pursuing the film that gives him the heebie-jeebies - and the films he makes are designed to give viewers just that. His Tauranga-made short horror film BE QUIET has just come off the back of playing as the preshow for box office hit 'A Quiet Place: Day One' at a cool US cinema chain, giving audiences the heebie-jeebies on an international stage.
Look into the darkness with Gary as he shares his musings on his film making, as well as screening his local film BE QUIET, followed by Gary's PICTURE THIS film of choice - Coppola's stunning BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA.
