In 2006 the Rogers Rose Garden was presented with the prestigious ‘Garden of Excellence Award’ by the World Federation of Rose Societies. This international award recognises exceptional rose gardens of the world from a historical, educational and/or visual point of view and the contribution the garden makes to the development of rose species internationally through its rose trial programmes and annual Pacific Rose Festival. The bronze plaque is attached to a pillar of ‘Jacks Pavilion’
The Pacific Rose Festival is held annually in November under the Pacific Accord of Friendship, this Accord was initiated by late Dr Sam McGredy to promote roses to the public. Introduced and New Zealand bred roses are voted for each year by the public. This is the only rose trial in the world that has a public voting system, all other trials are judged by panels of experts. The winning rose receives the prestigious ’New Zealand Rose of the Year’ award. Other awards were donated from Adelaide, Gifu (Japan) and California are contested for as part of the event. There is a Children’s Choice award which is voted for by local school children who attend the festival event. All members of the public are very welcome to attend and vote for their favourite 10 roses.
