I invite you to come and learn about the wonders of natural colour in a sustainable, educational, and fun workshop held in my Richmond-based garden in Ōtautahi Christchurch. This is a beginner's workshop which encourages you to connect with your natural surroundings and equips you with the knowledge to create beautiful, chemical-free, one-of-a-kind fabrics at home.

This workshop will include a brief overview of fabric preparation including scouring and mordanting to ensure long-lasting colour. We’ll cover foraging basics and the colour that can be obtained through various plants, plant waste, garden pickings and the way in which these can be modified to create a broad spectrum of colour offerings.

You will have the opportunity to harvest seasonal flowers directly from my dye garden to create beautiful abstract patterns on fabric using a method called bundle dyeing. We’ll practice our methods on some cotton square samples, then use our knowledge to dye a silk neckerchief/bandana. We’ll cover proper fabric care, and there will be the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the class.

All information and references will be compiled into a handy booklet for you to take home, as well as all your dyed items from the day. There will be a break during the workshop for refreshments, some nibbles and to connect with your fellow creatives. These are small intimate groups with no more than 10 people.

The class will be held outside in my garden in Richmond, Ōtautahi – this is a weather-dependent event (will be rescheduled to the following Sunday). I recommend wearing clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting marked, or instead, perhaps bringing along an apron.

Materials included:
- 2 x cotton/linen sample squares (these can be used for some fun at-home crafting / sewing projects)
- 1 x silk neckerchief (can be doubled as a bandana or hair ribbon)
- 1 x informational booklet that you can take home for reference
- all the tools required for natural dyeing - pots, steamer, tongs, gloves
- all plant material
