‘Miheke a Whakatau’ captures the traditional Moriori story of the Etchu Whakatau, who is said to have jumped over the Hikurangi Channel, his paua shell necklace jingling and
making music as he ran into the distance. In this wānanga, Moriori culture bearer and storyteller Deb Goomes will lead participants in weaving a paua shell necklace that
‘jingles’, creating a decorative art piece that expresses sound and tells a story.

All ages are welcome, but children six years and under must be accompanied and aided by an adult.

This workshop is being offered alongside the exhibition Hou Rongo – Moriori | Music | Manawa, which will feature in the Beautiful Science Gallery from 14 September – 27 October 2024.
