‘Kāinga’ translates to ‘home’ or ‘homestead’ in both Cook Island Māori and te reo Māori. This exhibition explores the connection between these two cultures, drawing on personal ancestry and historical ties. By modeling after and engaging in tivaivai techniques, a form of Polynesian quilting, Briana Duffy builds upon her haerenga tapu (journey/pilgrimage) to understand and immerse herself in her mixed cultural identity, particularly when removed from native lands.
Briana is particularly interested in the various ways traditional and Western crafting techniques foster a sense of belonging to these not-so-distant homelands. This connection also lends itself to the mental wellbeing benefits of acquiring a deeper relationship with one’s heritage. The use of art as a tool to reflect and self-critique allows for its healing and restorative capabilities. By prioritising mental wellbeing through applied artistic methodologies, Kāinga affirms the effectiveness of art practices in enhancing mental welfare.
