Jenny Robinson is known for her large-scale dry points and installations on Japanese paper.

Her choice of materials, and her use of Gampi (a silky-smooth, tissue-like Japanese paper with natural sizing that reduces the absorption of ink) in particular, form the central core of her work, with which she celebrates the material qualities of Gampi, emphasizing its strength and durability, its fragility, translucency, and weightlessness, which intentionally creates a juxtaposition between her subject matter and the material it is printed on.

This intimate three-hour demonstration will cover the preparation of traditional wheat paste (jin shofu) followed by how to handle and print on damp Gampi tissue. This will then be followed by how to seam prints together to create larger works, and the backing techniques traditionally used in Japanese scroll making to strengthen and support works seamed together. Examples of Robinson’s work on Gampi will be used throughout the demonstration.

Finally, Robinson will demonstrate how to paste the seamed and backed print to a board in the traditional manner, to dry and flatten the print.

This is a spectacle not to be missed! Seats are limited – book now!

What to bring:
• A notebook to make notes as this is a demonstration only.

About the tutor:
Jenny Robinson has been a professional artist and Master Printmaker for the past 40 years, based in London, San Francisco and now Sydney where she is set to open the doors to Sydney’s newest Open-Access Print Atelier in early 2024. The studio features the largest American French Tool press in the southern hemisphere for visiting artists to use to push the boundaries in printmaking.

Her innovative printmaking methods allow for spontaneity, experimentation and scaling up of the size of her prints; each one being a unique and expressive work on paper. She has been awarded numerous accolades and prizes, including the prestigious Mario Avati Engraving Prize from the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris in 2019.

Note: As our international guest artist, Jenny will be our Keynote speaker on Saturday 4 May at 10:15am in the Opanuku Studio, Corban Estate Arts Centre. Entry is free.
