This year we celebrate 100 years of working to advance penal reform.
The NZ Howard League was established in Canterbury by an amazingly progressive & energetic
woman; Blanche Baughan who settled 1st in Akaroa. She was a progressive philanthropist & poet who had recently arrived from England. Horrified at the conditions prisoners were facing in Canterbury in the early 1920's Blanche established a branch of the Howard League in Christchurch.
And now 100 years on & not a lot has unfortunately changed.
Their 1st AGM in 1925 featured an address calling for Mental Tests for prison inmates.
This year we have well known Forensic Psychiatrist Dr Erik Monasterio speaking on:
"Incarceration of People with Serious Mental Illness in NZ".
The evening begins with our AGM & election of officers followed by Dr. Monasterio's address.
Wine & cheese will be offered during the evening as will our traditional Hamper Raffle fundraiser.
Please bring some cash for the raffles or to make a donation.
Please come & celebrate our 100 years of service with us.
